Terms of Reference regarding the Scope of Work, Timeline and Payment for the translation of Aflatot Educational Materials for Early Childhood/Pre-school.

Aflatoun Child Savings International is an NGO registered in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Its mission is ''Inspiring children to socially and economically empower themselves to become agents of change for themselves and for a more equitable world".

The goal of helping children realize their potential to improve the world through education is what brought Aflatoun into existence. The particular importance of financial education has also come into clear focus in recent years. Despite living in a rapidly changing global economy, adults and young people have extremely low levels of financial literacy worldwide and schools and teachers too often lack the tools to address this challenge. On top of this lack of knowledge about financial matters, children and young people are increasingly exposed to socially, environmentally and economically unsustainable patterns of consumption. Aflatoun addresses these issues by providing a balanced social and financial education curriculum to empower children to better overcome these challenges. This is accomplished via a network of partner organizations in over 90 countries linked together by the global Aflatoun secretariat based in the Netherlands.

I. Background for Consultant

Aflatoun has developed a new curriculum for children 3 to 6 years old and is in need of English to French translator for this material called Aflatot.

The Aflatot programme is for children who have not yet entered primary school (usually 3-6 years of age). It's an early childhood education programme that lays the foundation for social and financial literacy. Early childhood is the most critical time for positive intervention. Children's development during this stage is strongly affected by their environment, and what they learn at this stage influences the rest of their lives. Through the programme children learn to recognize their skills and talents and how to make the most of these through games, stories and songs.

The Aflatot Manual consist of an introduction of around 1800 words, a manual of around 30.000 words and a storybook of around 9000 words. The total amount of work is around 40800 words.

The consultant should have:

1 Experience as a translator from English to French

Familiarity with early childhood education, child centered learning, activity based and participatory methodologies.

II. Scope of Work

Unless this agreement in hereafter amended, the Consultant agrees to:

Translate the Aflatot Manual and story book. Deliver the translations in MS Word format. Coordinate with the Aflatoun Secretariat for guidance on other special instructions.

II. Timeline

A. The consultant agrees to work within the following time-line:

March 11, 2013: Commence translation of materials April 5, 2013: Complete and submit the required translation

B. The work will be performed to the satisfaction of Aflatoun staff. Any concerns of Staff or Consultant will be discussed via email and phone as the work progresses.

III. Skill requirements

• Command of French and English language, previous experience translating from English to French preferred

• Bachelors Degree relevant to Education and curriculum development

• Minimum of 5 years' directly relevant work experience in early childhood curriculum development, with focus on participatory methodologies for children

• Relevant Pedagogical Experience

• Proficient with MS programs (e.g. MS Office)

• Accessibility via various communication methods (email, phone, skype, among others) and possibility of working through the Aflatoun online translation platform (wordbee).

IV. Payment

A. Payment will be made upon receipt of invoices from Consultant in the following sequence:

First payment of 20% of agreed fee following participation in the March Workshop. Second payment of 50% of agreed fee upon submission of revised curriculum (step 5 in timeline) Final payment 30% when the final version for the curriculum is delivered and the project is signed off by Aflatoun Child Savings International.

Note: The consultant has to provide Aflatoun with worksheets and schedules accounting for the hours of work.

V. Modifications

Modifications in the Scope of Work, Timeline and Payment will be made in writing after agreed upon by Aflatoun staff and the Consultant.
