Purpose of the role Bioversity International’s global programme on Forest Genetic Resources Conservation and Use (FGR) is active in Sub-Saharan Africa and seeks a scientist with knowledge of forest genetics. The objectives of the programme include understanding status and threats and how to conserve the genetic resources of priority tree species that are important for people’s well-being. Bioversity International works closely with partners in developing and developed countries to carry out research activities. Within the context of the CGIAR Research Programme on Forests, Trees and Agroforestry (CRP6), Bioversity’s FGR programme staff work closely with the Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) to produce joint outputs.The position is located in Yaounde, Cameroon on the campus of CIFOR. Key responsibilities Under the supervision of a Research Theme Leader, appointee will have the following responsibilities: · Contribute to research design and implementation of FGR activities in collaboration with partners in SSA; · Contribute to the assessment of research needs to support the sustainability of FGR in the region; · Contribute to data collection and analysis, and overseeing students; · Contribute to delivery of scientific outputs in CRP6 including the development of guidelines, publications in scientific journals; · Participate in the development of scientific grant proposals; · Contribute to capacity development of scientists, practitioners and other stakeholders in the region; · Contribute to the development of special reports including the FAO’s report on the State of the World’s Forest Genetic Resources and other regional and global initiatives; · Maintain partnerships with national and regional research partners including the SAFORGEN network.

Qualifications and Competencies: Essential qualifications and competencies: ? A PhD in Forest Genetics or related field. ? Minimum of 3 years experience, preferably in an international work environment and including field research in a development context. ? Knowledge of forest ecology and tree biology. ? Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to effectively interact with people at all levels and build consensus in a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary environment. ? Excellent command of the English language; working knowledge of French, both verbal and written. ? Strong analytical and synthesizing skills; ability to write clear and concise scientific documents. ? Proficiency in relevant software packages (Microsoft Word, Access, Excel and PowerPoint). Desirable qualifications and competencies: ? Knowledge of and / or experience with statistical analyses.

Terms and conditions: This is an internationally recruited position. Bioversity International offers an attractive remuneration package including a competitive salary, non-contributory retirement plan, medical insurance, housing allowance and leave provisions. All benefits are denominated and paid in US Dollars. The initial contract will be for a period of three years subject to a probationary period of one year.
