Social and Communications Officer (Maternity Cover), Wildlife Wood Project

A position is available, starting as soon as possible, as the social and communications officer for the Zoological Society of London (ZSL)’s Wildlife Wood Project in Cameroon. The Wildlife Wood Project engages the timber industry, Cameroonian government and local communities in sustainable wildlife conservation in the timber production forests of the Congo Basin. The project provides support to build stakeholder capacity for wildlife conservation, develop and implement monitoring and management tools on the ground and engage at the policy level to help create an environment supportive of the project’s long term vision.

The successful candidate will focus on two main areas. S/he will be responsible for developing and implementing a long term strategy for engaging with stakeholders at the local and national level to change behaviour in favour of conservation through a communications and outreach programme. This will be done in close partnership with the London based discovery and learning team. The successful candidate will also be responsible for leading on other aspects of project community engagement, including the successful development and implementation of joint anti-poaching efforts between local communities, logging company partners, and the Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife.

This is a 6 month position with the potential for extension. The post will be based in Yaoundé with regular trips to field sites in East Cameroon and to Douala. Some travel within Central Africa may be required. The post holder should have a postgraduate qualification in social science, communication or education and sound experience working with rural communities in Africa. Experience in CEPA, social marketing, conservation, community development and/or tropical forestry would be an advantage.

The successful candidate must have excellent written and verbal communication skills in both spoken and written French and English.

A base salary of £20,576-£25,093 p.a., plus benefits including, annual return flight from Europe to Cameroon, visa, and insurance under ZSL’s group travel insurance policy will be provided. The position is to start as soon as possible.
